Jonathan Siegel (JSBird) > Another great site near Beth She'an, a 6th century AD synagogue floor mosaic, preserved beautifully. The strange motifs include Jewish symbols at the top, a zodiac symbol in the middle, and a depiction of Abraham about to sacrifice Isaac at the bottom
Jonathan Siegel (JSBird) > Close up of the strangely childish figures of Abraham and Isaac. Speculation is that the artist was either a beginner or not first rate, perhaps because of the amount of congregation could afford.Below Abraham is the signature line of the artist in Greek and Hebrew.
Jonathan Siegel (JSBird) > From there westward to Har Meggido (mount Megiddo in Hebrew). Over 20 layers of civilzation in this tel. At the crossroads of two major ancient routes, it was the site of so many battles to control the site that it is better known for by the corruption of it's Hebrew name- Armageddon
Jonathan Siegel (JSBird) > The next day we left Tel Aviv for the Dead Sea, stopping at a museum of Bedouin history (highly recommended). The sign at the bottom warns parents and teachers to watch their children- hot coals, open pits, steep stairs "are dangerous". Apparently the trial lawyers have not yet been established in Israel
Jonathan Siegel (JSBird) > The bedouin have a fascinating culture, living a semi nomadic life over a large area of the Middle East, including the Israeli negev. At the end of our tour this youth helped serve us sweet bedouin tea
Jonathan Siegel (JSBird) > Northern Negev desert, on the way to the Dead Sea- a road sign not seen often in the U.S.
Jonathan Siegel (JSBird) > The signs are needed- a bedouin's herd of camels grazed along the road
Jonathan Siegel (JSBird) > The sign on the right shows we are at sea level. The Dead Sea is seen faintly at the far left in the distance. The lowest point on earth- 1,300 feet below sea level
Jonathan Siegel (JSBird) > The Dead Sea is over 30% solids- more than 7 times more than the oceans. The minerals give the water an oily feel, and precipitate out as seen here. The distant shore is Jordan, not far from where Moses looked into the land that he could not enter
