Jonathan Siegel (JSBird) > Recent excavation of the part of the western retaining wall just south of THE Western Wall. The road at the base was built by Herod. When the Romans destroyed the city, they tore down the Temple's walls above, pushing huge blocks off of the top, cracking and buckling the road below. Some of the debris and buckling is still visible

Jonathan Siegel (JSBird) > The plaza in front of the Western Wall is large, with a swirling changing show of people dancing, praying, taking pictures, gawking and people watching. These boys from a yeshiva (Jewish bible students) dance

Jonathan Siegel (JSBird) > Back into the Muslim quarter, on our way into the Christian quarter. Fresh pomegranite juice is squeezed

Jonathan Siegel (JSBird) > The Church of the Holy Sepulchre, where Jesus was crucified and buried (briefly). The "modern" church starts from the Byzantine era, and was one of the oddest structures I have ever seen- like a committee put it together over 1500 years. Here, on the roof, one can see remnants of Byzantine wall column supports which means that this "roof" was at some point indoors. The huts belong to the Ethiopian church (see next slide)

Jonathan Siegel (JSBird) > The Ethiopians were latecomers, and since every inch (literally) of the interior of the church is claimed by some branch of Christianity, they were forced to live on the roofs in mud huts- were they still live today

Jonathan Siegel (JSBird) > Outside, a symbol of Jerusalem: The police (in blue shirts) include a Jew, a Muslim and a Christian. The more heavily laden ones in green are the Border Police
